Women founded 44% of new businesses in 2025. The real reasons, and the question to ask before you join them.

Women founded 44% of new businesses in 2025, up from 29% in 2019, according to Forbes, as reported by Black Enterprise. Six years ago, fewer than three in ten new companies had a woman behind them. Now it is nearly half.

Why the number is surprising

Founding is supposed to be a young person's sport. The story we are sold has a hoodie, a garage and a founder who has never run anything. The women behind this number mostly do not fit that story. The Black Enterprise piece is about mid-career women leaving corporate America, which means a large share of the new founders are people who ran a P&L, got the "steady leadership" memo one too many times, and decided to run something with their own name on it.

Where the number comes from, and what it cannot tell you

It is Forbes reporting, repeated by Black Enterprise. "New businesses" is a wide net. It includes a consultancy registered on a Tuesday afternoon with one client, and it includes a funded company with payroll. The number counts starts, not finishes. It does not say how many of those businesses survive three years, what the founders earn, or whether they are happier than they were in the corner office. Treat it as a direction of travel, not a destination. When the share of new businesses founded by women rises from 29% to 44% in six years, something has changed about who believes she is allowed to try.

Picture it from the inside

You are 52, a vice president of operations, and the reorganization announced last quarter moved your two best directors under a peer. Your boss called it "simplification." Three former colleagues have called in the past year, each with a version of the same question: "Could you do for us what you did there, for a fee?" You said no three times, because you had a job. You are starting to notice that the job is the only reason.

What it means for you

The usual explanation for the number is that women are pushed out, and some are. But the number says something more useful than that. The women leaving are leaving with something to sell. Twenty years of running teams, budgets and vendors is a product, and the market for it does not require anyone's permission to promote you. Starting a company is not a consolation prize for the promotion that did not come. It is what happens when the promotion stops being the only way to get paid for what you know.

The people who were your competition for the next title are now your clients, partners and referrals. The network you built as an executive is the asset. It does not transfer to a founder in a hoodie. It transfers to you.

What to do before you join them

Do not quit to find out whether anyone will pay you. Find out first. Call two of the people who asked and say: "If I were available in January, what would you want done, and what would you budget for it?" Real buyers answer with a scope and a number. Polite admirers answer with "let's definitely talk." You need two real buyers before you resign, and one of them should be willing to sign something.

Then ask yourself the question the 44% already answered. If your employer were a client instead of a boss, would you keep the account?
